Ionic columns are one of three types of column styles used in Greece; Vitruvius wrote of this design as "a fitting combination of Doric hardness and Corinthian sophistication". Two early examples of Ionic columns still exist in modern-day Turkey: the Temple of Hera at Samos and the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus. The example you see is on display in the British Museum today.
