Large Signed Native American Hopi Original Mudhead Kachina Katsina Doll on Stand
Located in Studio City, CA
A wonderfully handcrafted/detailed and decorated Native American Hopi Mudhead Kachina doll. Quite an unusually large work. A striking piece overall. Hand painted with leather and possibly turquoise (necklace) accompaniment. Hopi katsina figures, also known as kachina dolls, are figures carved, typically from cottonwood root by the Hopi people. Initially, kachina dolls were made to instruct young girls and new brides about katsinas or katsinam, the immortal beings that bring rain, control other aspects of the natural world and society, and act as messengers between humans and the spirit world. The Mudhead or Koyemsi figure is viewed as a clown/joker figure who is responsible for laughter and entertainment at Hopi dances and ceremonial events. He plays drums and games to keep his audience engaged. The piece is signed by the artist under the base. From an extensive collection of Native American objects and artifacts. Would be a great addition to any Native American Art...

American Folk Art Peacocks in Tree Sculpture Signed by NJ decoy carver Ken Kirby
Located in Forney, TX
A wonderful vintage American folk art hand carved and painted figural peacock tree by decoy carver Ken Kirby (New Jersey, United States). Featuring three uniquely modeled exotic peacock bird figures in beautiful intricately detailed polychrome paint perched in naturalistic twig tree, rising on sturdy ebonized turned pineapple-form finial base. Signed, Ken Kirby burn-blindstamped and hand written to verso. Highly decorative, rare, whimsy and uniquely distinctive, this charming work makes for a wonderful console statue, shelf, mantle accent, table centerpiece, or folky artwork, sure to add graceful whimsical elegance, cozy romantic sophistication, rustic warmth, natural interest, character and charm to any space! Dimensions: (approx) 23.5" Tall, 17" Wide, 10" Deep Base: 5.25" Diameter About the Maker/Artist/Creator: Ken Kirby (shown in 18th photo) While on a vacation to the Outer Banks of North Carolina in 1983, Ken visited a decoy shop and was fascinated by the wildfowl carvings on display. He purchased a rough blank for a decoy to try his hand at carving and painting. He was already an experienced woodworker who had made most of the furniture in his home. With this first decoy, his carving career began. He began selling his birds in decoy shops on the Outer Banks and then expanded to shops in Maryland and New Jersey, later in Maine. Ken Kirby Decoy Classics was born. In his early years, he discovered a special fascination with old classic decoys made by famous carvers. He has won many ribbons for his duck and shorebird carvings...
