Midcentury Whale Sculpture on Stand, Circa 1960s

About the Item

This midcentury folk art sculpture features a cobalt blue sperm whale rendered in soldered tin, with lines that are both strong and graceful rests atop a simple, sturdy black steel base. Scrap tin was used in the creation of this one-of-a-kind piece and where some of the rich blue paint has worn away, lettering is visible. The hollow whale would make a striking focal-point for a beach house fireplace mantle or table centerpiece. We love it on a bookshelf or a generous windowsill. The sculpture is not signed -at least not in any way I can identify. But it is gorgeously formed. The fins and tail possess inherent grace. The blue is the color of the ocean off the coast of Nantucket the Vineyard in the summer. The sculpture measures approximately 18.5" in length, 11.5" in height and is 8" from fin to fin.

  • Pair Folk Art Paintings on Wood Panel, 1980s, by Moses Tolliver "MoseT"
    Located in Southbury, CT
My uncle Bob was a country lawyer in rural Alabama and Moses Tolliver was one of his friends and clients. The pair of original paintings you see here were given to my uncle by Mr. Tolliver in exchange for legal services in the 1980s. Both the human figure and the snake were painted on scrap wood paneling and each has an aluminum beer pull-tab on the back for hanging. The works have been framed so the pull tab is not visible; if you prefer, simply remove the frames and both pieces will be as created. The snake painting...
