Sculpture "Tactile Monolith no 2" by Stine Mikkelsen

Sculpture "Tactile Monolith no 2" by Stine Mikkelsen Dimensions: 60 x 108 x 18 cm Materials: Composite and Granite Tactile Monoliths is a minimal collection of objects created by Copenhagen-based designer Stine Mikkelsen. The designer is fascinated by objects that the user can keep on having a dialogue with; objects that make people wonder. If the meaning of an object is not clear, people feel invited to explore and use their imaginations. By using methods known from textile design, Mikkelsen created a collection of objects based on unexpected material manipulations. By challenging the way people normally perceive furniture design, she wanted to capture the users attention. The collection consists of objects with a clear reference to a function and other objects, which are more sculptural. Through this, she wanted to challenge the boundaries for how people understand textile – and product design today. Stine Mikkelsen is a Copenhagen-based material researcher and manipulator working within the field of experimental product design. With a background in textile design, materials have a primary role for her in both the process as well as the final objects. Through challenging and refining methods from this field, unexpected things occur which lead to new ways of making and producing. Through this, she not only challenges the way we understand textile and product design, she also modernises the notion of crafts.

About the Maker

Galerie Philia Furniture

Galerie Philia is a recognized contemporary design and modern fine arts gallery representing world wide known designers and artists. The Galerie Philia exhibits a collection resulting from a rhizomatic research transcending formal, stylistic, national or historical barriers. The selected art works emanates from different cultures and periods, are incarnated in various and multiform mediums, and evoke multiple and changing interior worlds. The only criterion unifying this composite plurality is their esthetical qualities and the sense they convey. The Galerie Philia attempts in this way to build bridges between different artistic continents in order to enlighten art works endowed with a marked artistic depth.
