About the Item

For sale we have a very striking, original 1930s/40s advertising sign in red and white enamel on black-ground for ‘Gilbey’s Invalid Port’. The enamel sign has the most amazing patina and the desired amount of weathering to the edges. Gilbey's Invalid Port is a type of Portuguese Port wine, which was produced exclusively in the Douro Valley of Northern Portugal. Gilbey's claimed invigorating and tonic properties for the wine! The wine was supplied by Croft, shipped in cask and bottled by Gilbey's in London. The port wine was an enormous success, with sales reaching a peak of nearly five million bottles between the wars.  Such a striking piece, which would look fantastic in a pub or cocktail bar, garden or garage. There are holes around the edges for hanging the sign from screws and washers, or a top central hole, which we've used to thread through a lace. Measurements: 76cm W x 53.5 high
