You are viewing an extremely rare and large baseball scoreboard in fantastic original condition. This is a baseball fans dream to acquire such a part of history that you will most likely never see again. The scoreboard was acquired from a collector of top of the line baseball memorabilia. From the info that was provided to Fritz and Hollander, the only other one that even closely resembles this one is in Cooperstown, Baseball Hall of Fame. The scoreboards history as follows: It was hanging and used in a POOL hall betting parlor in Altoona, Pa. The board is from circa 1898 to 1903. This is when scores were reported by teletype and then by radio. The operators would post the score inning by inning with chalk to keep track of the game for betting purposes. It has original wood frame with a full wooden back and is painted on linoleum. You can still put chalk on the board and look up a game score from that period, it would look amazing. If you look closely at the stenciled advertisement for "Fashion Park Clothes", this store opened in the late 1800s in Altoona, PA. There is an advertisement that is stenciled underneath for "Hickey Freeman Co. one of top mens clothing companies. We can actually date the sign being that Hickey Freeman started business in 1899 in Rochester NY. This board could be as early as 1901 when the American league was formed. The first baseball game ever broadcast on radio was a Pittsburgh Pirates versus Philadelphia Phillies game on August 5, 1921. There were only 8 teams in the American league and the same for the National league in the beginning. The other four on the lower part that is separate, is noted for the Farm Leagues.
