About the Item
Antique reverse-painted storefront sign.
This piece was for a shop that specialized in alcoholic and tobacco goods. Features a red field with gold-tone painted serif lettering. While there isn't any information online regarding the location of this shop, context clues in the design and manufacture tell us that it dates to at least the early 20th century. "Bonded whiskies" met the requirements of the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, meant to contract the widespread adulteration, watering down, and, in some cases, poisoning of whiskies being produced in the United States. This would be more of a factor before Prohibition began in 1920.
The title comes from William Shakespeare's Hamlet, Act 3, Scene 2: "A man that Fortune's buffets and rewards / Hast ta'en with equal thanks," where Hamlet praises Horatio for his composure and wisdom in his ability to accept both good and bad fortune with equanimity. Quite a reference when dealing with the vices listed on this sign.
