About the Item

19th Century Folk-art Handmade Wooden Moving Drunken Figure Toy English museum hand crafted moving folk art drinking animated figure. Sometimes objects are created for the love of creating them. This is most certainly one of those objects. At one point it would have been fully movable with its two paddles at the rare that would have opened its mouth and lifted his bottle towards the cup to be drunk. (This function doesn’t work now, due to its age and condition however all the parts are present for this to be done if repaired. Still with its original paint present, wearing top hat and tail, presented on a velour base in a 19th Century glass dome. Just a brilliant piece of English folk art in our humble opinion. Size: H 8” x W 2” x D 3.5” Origin: English Period: 1850 Material: Pine Condition: A fragile object that has stood the test of time of 200 hundred years. The pine wood has very old (long gone worm holes present) that are firm and not fragile. With loss of detail across areas shown in the photos, the paint is old and worn also. The bass isn’t very stable but the object stands alone as shown. The movement doesn’t work anymore but the paddles t the back that would have once moved it are present and the arm holding the bottle does move very slightly. The mouth is firmly open and the left are doesn’t move at all. One boot has broken off and the pine box it stands on is firm but loosely held together. NOT: This is a very (very) old handmade object so please expect this to be reflected in its condition. It’s exceedingly difficult to photograph all the areas in this piece, therefore we strongly suggest reviewing all the photos provided as part of this advert and propose questions where sections are unclear to avoid disappointment.
