Large Size Set of '7' Victorian Lithographed Alphabet Blocks, circa 1885

About the Item

This is a large size set of colorful Victorian blocks which you just don't see anymore and are difficult to find. Considered an early learning device, these 19th century alphabet blocks were made of lithographed paper on wood, with scenes of children's themes seen in fairy tales, or children at whimsical play, and so designed to "stack" them in a particular alphabetical order or spelling game. When finished playing with, they were put away, in descending order, one block inside the other and condensed into the largest block, thus the term "nesting blocks" was used. These are probably of American manufacture by The Crandall Toy Company of Montrose, Pennsylvania . (Note: they specialized in, what they called, "Mammoth Alphabet Blocks" which usually were made with the base block at 6" square). Since some of the paper is lacking on the side of the large 6" block, ihe maker can't be verified. If not, it would still have been made by one of the other two major toy companies like Bliss or McLoughlin, who produced these types of toys. This is a complete set with all (7) blocks in tact; the wooden blocks are well made and dovetailed top to bottom at each corner and structurally very sound. It is very hard to find a complete set, because of the young age of children using these; they would have damaged or lost a block here and there, due to their rough play. There are paper losses to some of the surfaces but most of the paper remains, and is original and in bright colors (see images); a delightful piece of Americana. Dimensions: 30 1/2" high (when stacked) x 6 1/8" square at the base block. The top block is 2 5/8" square. The other blocks graduate in size between those two top and bottom blocks.

Manufactured in 1884 by the Shepard Hardware Company in Buffalo, New York, this cast iron mechanical bank measures 7 1/8" long and is in excellent all original condition and paint, especially considering that the Shepard Company did not use a primer rendering their surface more vulnerable than say, the Steven's Company. There is no touch up or repaint, and no restoration of any kind. Colors of bright red on the dress, flesh tones, tan colored dog, and maroon base are all very bright and crisp. The bank is accompanied by the original wooden box in which it was originally shipped; a very special find and charming piece of Americana. Rare to find the original box. The bank and box came directly from an estate and the original owner, and I have owned it since then for over 35 years. The theme of the bank depicts a young Victorian girl playing with her golden retriever. It is one of only four antique mechanical banks...

Very attractive and well-made decorative and colorful Staffordshire porcelain money box or savings bank; made in England, indicative of the style potters from that region employed, circa 1880. Nicely detailed with green floral facie, orange double pane windows and front door, and a white painted cottage with brown steps and green fauna at entry. There were no "coin traps" or provisions for coin removal so banks such as these are rare since smashing or breaking the bank was the only method by which the money could be retrieved. The bank is in very good all original condition with only a minor "hairline" repair to one of the chimney stacks (see image). It is very sound and done a long time ago and is hardly noticeable. Being a cross collectible, this would be a very unique addition for a Staffordshire collector indeed (the subject being a money box), or a welcome compliment to any still bank...

The Pelican Mechanical Bank is made of cast iron and was manufactured by The J. & E. Steven's Manufacturing Company, in Cromwell, Connecticut in 1878. Fine Quality Antique French Toy "Dancing Couple", circa 1880, Rare

Located in Incline Village, NV

One of a kind, fine quality antique toy, "Dancing Couples" is of French manufacture, it is marked in raised lettering "A.L. Paris" at the top of the base. It is also very similar to several French toys noted in "Antique Toys" by Jeffrey Levitt, and the young lady's face is almost identical to the bisque face on a French toy referenced on page 209 plate #372. This outstanding toy consists of two figures, a young man resembling Napoleon Bonaparte, and a young lady, dressed in period clothes with bisque (porcelain) faces and heads and wooden legs. The base is some type of metal composite consisting of a cast lead alloy. The polychromed hand painted blue and red metal dance floor is also a lead alloy. The wire stands supporting the figures is of ferrous metal. The bisque faces are very lifelike with flesh tones and blue eyes, rosy cheeks to the lady with bisque auburn hair.
