19th Century Ethiopian Throne

About the Item

This large, impressive nineteenth-century Ethiopian throne, from the Wollega Oromo culture, features a high, upright back-rest. An attractive cut-out cross formation, typically found among chairs from this region of Ethiopia, decorates the back support. The large, round seat of the chair is supported by three slightly bow-shaped legs with a distinctive 'knuckle' formation located halfway up the vertical stilt supports. High-backed wooden chairs figure prominently in the installation of chiefs among different groups in Ethiopia - serving as symbols of rank and entitlement during meetings by the council of elders. ‍Estimated Period: Second Half of 19th Century Ex Private Family Collection, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
