About the Item

Antique Persian Afshar Bagface Bag, Late 19th Century This charming Afshar bag face uses rich saturated vegetable colors and soft glossy wool, with rows of alternating flowers and blossom heads drawn against the indigo field. The vegetal repertoire depicted here may ultimately derive from border ornament, but it seems to have been used quite often to form a distinctively Afshar field design. Its use in this example is quite successful, with a particularly masterful use of white for highlighting and contrast.
