About the Item
Antique Persian Qashqai Bagface, Late 19th Century
A colorful bag face with excellent color, the design is rather common. Its attributes include clarity of color and contrasting shades contributing to the visual appeal. The four medallions or “gols” in the four corners are often called ‘memling gols’ referring to a Dutch painter from the 15th century who often created scenes with rugs of the period in use. These were mostly Anatolian / Turkish rugs and this type of medallion is seen throughout the rug weaving world from Central Asia to Anatolia. The colorful medallions, including the central diamond form are clearly contrasted on the midnight indigo blue field. The smaller designs floating on the field, referred to as ‘tertiary devices’ are interspersed among the primary central and secondary memling medallions with some regularity, suggesting it was a well planned pattern. The striped ends appearing at both the top and bottom ends are a hallmark feature of Qashqai weavings.
