Dogon Tribe Hardwood Carved Rhythm Pounder from Mali, Africa
About the Item
Museum quality Dogon tribe ironwood percussion pounder reportedly collected from a Tellem cave in the Bandiagara Escarpment in Mali. Collected in the late 1970’s with approximate age to the second quarter of the 20th Century and possibly older. Rhythm Pounders are still used by the Dogon and neighboring tribes during rituals and dancing being a primary percussive instrument. Traditional carving with chevrons and straight and spiraling lines. with openwork hand grip area. Very heavy with appropriate age and use wear.
The Rhythm Pounder measures 66” high by 6” deep by 6” wide.
Condition: Please see detail photos. The overall condition is quite good with expected and enhancing signs of age including some stable age cracks and losses which do not detract from the powerful and artistic presentation.
