Early 20th Century Figurative Sculpture of a Mother with Children
About the Item
This finely carved early twentieth-century figure, from the Yoruba culture in Nigeria, depicts a mother and her two children. The mother is depicted in a kneeling position, holding a two-legged offering bowl. Crowning her head is a three-pronged coiffure, which bears traces of Reckitt's Blue. The sculpture represents one of her children as being strapped to her back, while the other child stands by her side, reaching up to hold her arm.
