Early Large Ashanti Polychrome Mother Drum, Ghana early 20th century Osei Bonsu
About the Item
This is a "Mother drum", Asante, Ghana. with polychrome paints, Circa 1935. In the style of the well-known carver Osei Bonsu (1900-1977).
Low relief imagery envelopes the body of this female drum.
The images are associated with Akan proverbs. There are roughly one thousand different images of animals, humans, plants, and other symbols that refer to Akan proverbs, riddles, maxims, and folktales. Taken together, these phrases set forth most of the values and traits that encompass the Akan moral universe.
This “mother” drum is therefore “dressed in knowledge and wisdom”, as is appropriate for a commanding leader and founder of a group or lineage. The Akan are a matrilineal society. Imparting knowledge and morality are strong aspects of maternal nurturance, as well as leadership.
A small packet has been tied on the inside of this drum. It most likely contains a talisman or charm to protect the drum and its players, or it holds a prayer to ensure the power and strength of the “voice” of the drum.
