Striking Large Abstract Adan Figure Arm Up, Ghana, Early 20th Century

About the Item

The largest Adan shrine figure we have ever seen at 27 1/2 inches high. Usually Adan figures are a third of this size or less. At this scale the sculptural skill of Adan artists is forcefully presented. The head is particularly interesting aesthetically, the facial features are carved in an expression hard to interpret and gives the figure a powerful and mysterious presence. It stands on short legs with flexed knees that support a tubular body, columnar neck, and cubist head. The flat disc it supports on its head most likely represents a carrying bowl or basket. The use of these figures is also somewhat mysterious. This could have been placed in a shrine until it no longer had the desired effect for the cult devotees. Or it could be a master carver's exhibition or sample piece. The Adan border Ghana and Togo and are also known as the Adja or Ada people. It is carved wood with blue and red-brown pigments. Created in the mid-late 20th century. Measures: 27 1/2 x 7 x 4 1/2 inches. On a painted steel stand that raises it to a height of 28 inches. In good condition, appropriate for it age, origin, and mediums. An eroded area on the top of the raised left hand. Color is most accurate in the still images.
