Early Classic Wood Ashanti Stool Circle Supporting Top, Ghana Mid-20th Century

About the Item

A well-loved traditional stool or seat from the Akan people of Ghana. The supports for Akan stools take many forms, they can be purely geometric or architectural with simple posts and columns, or, as in this case, a open circular form supporting the curved seat. Created in the early to mid-20th century, by an anonymous artist of the Akan people of Ghana, probably Ashanti (Asante) or Fanti (Fante). Special stools or seats are made for those who have reached puberty. They are used in homes, schools and sometimes carried in processions. This one is carved from a fairly hard wood that has a light tan color and a satiny feel to the seat. It has delicate notches along some of the raised edges creating a wave design and lightly incised lines in a triangular shape on the support arches and along one edge. It may have been placed in a shrine as it has remains of some white pigments in the grooves and crevices, and some hardened mud wasp nest walls in the holes on the sides. It may have been cleaned of the white powders that had built up on its surface from offerings in a shrine context. It is not in the best condition, with numerous cracks, the curved ends of the seat damaged, and the hardened mud wasp nest walls mentioned above, however still tight and strong. See photos. Nevertheless it has an elegant, stately profile, reminiscent of ancient Egyptian temples. It is in good condition, appropriate for its age, use, and medium. Scuffs and nicks here and there. This was field collected in Ghana c. 2002. Small repair to one corner.
