Mid-Twentieth Century 'Zakpai' Mask
About the Item
This finely carved mid-twentieth century 'zakpai' mask, from the Dan culture in the Ivory Coast, reflects Dan conceptions of beauty. With its rounded eyes, accentuated cheekbones and protruding open lips, the mask displays refined facial features. A vertical line in relief - a 'scar' - runs down the centre of the forehead, and throughout, the mask exhibits a smooth, dark chocolate surface. As a result of use over time, the back of the mask has developed a good, worn patina.
