Wabi-Sabi Old Repaired Ashanti Bronze Brass Vessel Crocodiles, Patina, Repairs
About the Item
Modern and contemporary artists working in crafts mediums (especially ceramics, metals and basketry) in the Expressionist style developed from the 1950s, were inspired by such artworks from around the world, especially from Asia. This ancient and well-loved vessel from Ghana, West Africa has been torn and patched in a way that resembles the torn and patched pottery of Japan, and the contemporary art vessels of Peter Voulkos and the exquisite metal vessels of June Schwarcz.
This round-bottomed, waisted, and flaring vessel in bronze has taken on the patina of great age. The surface was engraved with bands of geometric designs similar to those seen on traditional Akan textiles and other objects. There are three crocodiles in high relief in the lower section. It was patched around the rim with scraps of embossed sheet metal from other vessels.
From the Akan people of Ghana (the Ashanti, Fanti and others). A conservative date of creation is 19th century, although it was patched with scraps from other sacred vessels in more recent times.
Called "kudos" these were used as treasure boxes or containers for gold and other precious items.
