About the Item
19th century French Louis XIV Patinaed Bronze & Gilt Bronze Chandelier is a master work of the Belle Epoque Period! Meticulously hand-cast in solid bronze with gilt bronze accents, it was designed for an opulent home before the days of widespread availability of electric lighting. One can definitely see an Italianate influence in the expression of the Baroque style, yet the design is somewhat restrained compared to more flamboyant examples. The original canopy is a singularly beautiful rosette, perfect for covering the mounting and electrical connection in the ceiling. Add as much chain as you like, but the chandelier comes with what is seen here, making the entire affair 51" tall as pictured. The top of the fixture itself is another variation on a rosette but with integral heraldic crests, situated atop a spiraled and flared shaft with an upturned foliate base transitioning into the main body of the fixture. The main body is an intriguing urn form finished at the base with a gilded rosette with finial in a spiral foliate pattern seemingly held in place with golden shell designs. Each of the twelve arms are magnificently double-scrolled with flourishes and finials, expanding out to the base of the chandelles protected by floral rosette bobeches in gold Realistic candle sleeve covers conceal the modern lighting, as this fixture has been professionally converted to electric lighting. A truly timeless and amazing find!
