Orientalist Gasolier Lantern
About the Item
This fixture is very much in the Moorish taste, orientalism, a romantic view of the Levant, was expressed in paintings furniture and in this case lighting. Often such a lamp was used in a library / smoking room or in a hall. The minaret-shaped cover and lobed shaped base are brass, profusely pierced with arabesques. The original curved leaded stained glass panels are flanked by stylized brass columns. When lit, the combination of shadows from the pierced body and colored light from the glass give a magical atmospheric effect. It was originally a gas-fixture, circa 1880.

This hanging lamp is typical of the production of such lanterns by the Boston & Sandwich Glass Company of Sandwich, Massachusetts, during the 1830s, and perhaps as late as the early 1840s. The present example is an unusually elaborate specimen with its overall frosting and cutting. In their The Glass Industry in Sandwich, II (1989), Raymond E. Barlow and Joan E. Kaiser quote Boston & Sandwich Glass Company manager Deming Jarves on the fabrication of lamps of this general type (p. 225 no. 2398).
