2 Tier 17th Century Electric Model Dutch Brass Chandelier with 12 Lights H80xW77

About the Item

Pieter Teyler van der Hulst (1702 - 1788) was a wealthy Dutch cloth and silk merchant, banker and philanthropist. As a proponent of the Enlightenment, Teyler had a keen interest in art and science and he collected coins, prints, drawings, books and fossils. Teyler became best known for his bequest of 2 million Dutch guilders for the promotion of arts and sciences. The Teylers Museum of art, science and history was founded in 1788, the first and oldest still open museum in the Netherlands. Inspired by 17th century Dutch design, the majestic Teyler 700.1 chandelier evokes the grandeur of Holland's Golden Age with its hand-cast solid brass frame adorned by twelve gracefully extending arms. At 80cm high and 77cm wide, this commanding replica maintains the proportions and presence of the antique original while updated for modern wiring. Intricate scrollwork borders the two-tiered fixture, honoring cherished metalcraft techniques that brought warmth to palatial spaces centuries ago. With its timeless elegance and alluring golden glow, the Teyler 700.1 is a contemporary tribute to the antique Dutch chandelier. Original historical moulds from the era are utilised to create the brass components. Additionally, casting is still done the old-fashioned way in a greasy type of sand called Brussels’ soil. After the crown has been varnished, skilled artisans assemble the components. Electric wires run subtly along the arms, as they are made out of solid brass. The arms and curls are soldered together. While the crowns are being put together, the electrical wiring and lighting components are covertly placed. Brink & van Keulen, a family-owned business founded in 1946, upholds the art of casting by producing the highest calibre brass chandeliers. Chandeliers by Brink and van Keulen can be found in a number of prestigious churches and monumental buildings in the Netherlands and other parts of the world. Through the transmission of knowledge through many generations, Brink & van Keulen has substantially aided in the preservation of the Dutch yellow casting craft. The business is the sole manufacturer of chandeliers using original casting moulds from the 17th century in all of Europe.
