About the Item

Magnificent and high quality pair of French gilt bronze candelabra from the late 18th/early 19th century, raised by a circular Griotte red marble pedestal on gilded feet, with 6 lights each, in the style of Clodion. Each marble base has a finely chiseled golden decoration and 3 rosettes. Above the bases are the two lovely, richly chiseled bronze putti standing on a rockery. Their nudity is covered with vine leaves. Both hold a reed in one of their hands. One of the putti is an allegory of the Bacchanalia evident through the bunches of grapes in his hair and a jar of wine at his feet. A tambourine and draped fur hang from his back. The other is probably also an allegory of the Bacchanalia considering the vine leaves in his hair, but no grapes, and the wineskin at his feet. Draped fur also hangs from its back. They hold a stem decorated with acanthus leaves displaying a rich attention to detail and a wonderful texture which leads to a bowl finely decorated with chiseled foliage from which the branches of 5 lights extend and the central stem crowned with a flame. The branches are partly twisted and partly decorated with acanthus leaves. Each of the arms opens onto elegant fluted candlesticks with berry bobeches. Candelabras are ready to mount into lamps and are shipped disassembled. Conditions: Very good. Wear consistent with age and use. The arm of one of the lights of one of the chandeliers was restored and soldered and as a result the area near the gilded bronze solder became dark. A rosette is missing on the marble base. Some very small chips on the edge of the marble bases which do not alter them visually. France, around 1800.. Clodion, pseudonym of Claude Michel, born December 20, 1738 in Nancy and died March 29, 1814 in Paris, was a sculptor from Lorraine who became French from 1766 Claude Michel is the son of Thomas Michel and Anne Adam, and is therefore part of the Adam dynasty of sculptors with his brothers Sigisbert François (1728-1811) and Pierre Joseph Michel (1737-1787). He was quickly called Claudion, Clodion or little Claude to differentiate him from an older brother. From 1756, he was a student of the model school at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, staying with his uncle Lambert Sigisbert Adam. When the latter died in 1759, he enrolled as a student of Jean-Baptiste Pigalle. On September 1, 1759, Clodion won the first prize for sculpture. One of his first masterpieces is the Minerva (1766, New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art), which refers to the ancient Minerva from the Giustiniani collection
