About the Item

This rare pendant light was produced by Gispen in The Netherlands in the 1950s. The striking cone shaped shade is made of a slightly glossy, white opaline glass. The shade is attached to the two-tier fixture made in a matte nickel, with a beautiful patina. About Gispen Willem Hendrik Gispen (1890,-1981) was a Dutch industrial designer, best known for his Giso lamps and serially produced functionalist steel-tube furniture. From 1923 onwards Gispen came in direct contact with multiple inspirational sources: the ideas of the Bauhaus through architect J.J.P. Oud, the style of H. Muthesius and the principles of the artists of De Stijl. In 1925, at the international exhibition of Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris, not only did Gispen receive a medal for his ornamental iron-work, he also became acquainted with Le Corbusier, Constructivism and other French modernists. In 1926 Gispen put his Giso lamps on the market and placed himself in the designers’ vanguard by participating in the exhibition die Wohnung in Stuttgart. Gispen later opened showrooms in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Brussels and later in London, Paris and other cities abroad. The shapes of the lamps were inspired by the Art Deco movement of this era, but at the same time retained a timeless, functional and modern appeal.
