About the Item

Ninfea Pendant light designed by Toni Zuccheri for Venini in 1970. The blown Murano glass pendant in a deep emerald green has marbling of clear and white glass through, creating various levels of hypnotic transparency. The organic undulating shape is reminiscent of an oyster shell, mushroom or jellyfish. This wonderful pendant is great for above a dining table, in a kitchen, office or living room, providing both ambient light to the room as well as directional light below. Working with famed Murano glass manufacture Venini from the 1960's onwards, Luigi Zuccheri was the son of an animal painter Luigi Zuccheri, inheriting a passion for animals, which are a recurrent theme in his creations. He attended the Faculty of Architecture in Venice, under the direction of Gardella, Albini, Scarpa and Samonà. As an architect, he worked in Venice and Milan, while continuing to create in glass, presenting Membrane at the 1972 Biennale. In 1981 he designed and produced the Fenice d'oro award for the Venice Film Festival; in 1985 he exhibited his works at the Padiglione di arte contemporanea (PAC) in Milan. In 1989 he created the Reggiani Light Gallery at 800 Fifth Avenue in New York; again for Reggiani he created the stand at Euroluce in Milan; in 1990 he exhibited in the New York gallery. In 1996, his works were presented at the Kunstmuseum in Düsseldorf, in the exhibition 'Italienisches Glas. Murano Miland', 1930-1970. In 1999, he exhibited his Albero delle stagioni (Tree of the Seasons) in the hall of the Major Council of the Doge's Palace in Venice, on the occasion of the international exhibition 'Aperto Vetro'. In the same year, he exhibited his new Tree of Life in San Vito al Tagliamento as part of the 'Vitraria' event. In 2003 he received the Rotary International award. In the 1990s he participated, with works and installations, in various editions of the contemporary art exhibition 'Hic et Nunc', directed by critic Angelo Bertani. He died in San Vito al Tagliamento in 2008. His works are exhibited at the Murano Glass Museum, MOMA and the Guggenheim in New York, the Okkaido Museum in Sapporo, and the Metropolitan Tien Art Museum in Tokyo.

Toni Zuccheri

Italian glassmaker and master Murano craftsman Toni Zuccheri’s lifelong passion for nature and animals contributed to the development of some of the finest modernist works in Murano glass history. His mid-century-era chandeliers, wall sconces, table lamps and vases showcase his penchant for experimentation and exceptional skill in color and form.

Zuccheri was born in 1936 in San Vito al Tagliamento. His father was Luigi Zuccheri (1904–74), a renowned painter known for his depictions of animals (and friend of artist Giorgio De Chirico). Toni not only inherited his father’s love of the animal kingdom — particularly birds — but also his artistic talents, demonstrating an intuitive skill for drawing at an early age.

In 1945, the Zuccheri family moved to Venice. At the city’s University Institute of Architecture, Toni studied under esteemed Italian architects Franco Albini, Ignazio Gardella and Carlo Scarpa.

During the early 1960s, Zuccheri focused on the art of glassmaking and collaborated with Venini. While working with the celebrated Italian Murano glass factory, he developed an innovative type of thick window glass sheets called Vetrate Grosse with prolific Italian architect and furniture designer Gio Ponti. The glass was made of dense, vitreous pastes mixed with murrine, raw pigment, shards of filigrana cane and fine wire mesh.

Zuccheri exhibited a group of elaborate bird and farm animal sculptures at the 1964 Venice Biennale. The birds, which were accented with gold leaf, included vibrantly hued guinea fowl-shaped works with murrine bodies, turkeys, owls and hoopoes (colorful birds known for their crown of feathers). Zuccheri employed an ingenious glass layering technique to create the birds’ feathers, while their realistic-looking legs and feet were made of bronze.

Throughout his career, Zuccheri’s love of birds and animals was a recurring theme in many of his glassworks, which he created for Venini and other Italian Murano glass manufacturers such as VeArt and Barovier & Toso. Today, his work lives on in galleries and private collections worldwide.
