Large French Hexagonal Wrought Iron Hanging Lantern, 19th Century

About the Item

This fantastic hexagonal wrought iron hanging lantern features six glass panes and three central lights descending from a central stem. The French antique piece dates back to the 19th Century, and is embellished with scroll work at top, center and bottom. The piece is poised to bring a fantastic air of the French Antique History with which it was made. Each piece in our shop is professionally rewired and in working order. They have been rewired at our fourth generation antique store in The French Quarter of New Orleans. Each chandelier and lantern comes with a vintage canopy, three feet of chain, and ample wire, and each sconce comes with all materials needed to mount. Each piece is newly wired with UL approved wire and sockets and is fully operable. This piece is a collection of a fourth generation, family owned business in New Orleans called The French Antique Shop. The store was first opened by Marie and Marcel Granet in Paris when they married in 1927. A jewish family, they came to the United States before the outbreak of the Second World War, leaving on the last boat out of Paris' port, Le Havre. When they reached New Orleans, they fell in love with the Vieux Carre as it reminded them of home. Their first shop here in New Orleans was located on Chartres Street in the French Quarter and was stocked originally with pieces they had brought with them from Paris. They moved to Royal Street and settled in their present expanded location at 225 Royal Street in 1947. Today, the shop is run by the third and fourth generation, Marc, and his two sons Michael and Brian. By purchasing from our shop, you're supporting a family run business which focuses on artisan made, high quality craft with an emphasis on quality. Thank you for helping us continue a dream started four generations ago!

19th Century Mexican San Miguel Wrought Iron Lantern
Located in Forney, TX
A most impressive and ornately decorated antique electrified hanging lantern from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico (New Spain). Exquisitely hand-crafted in the 19th century (possibly late 18th century), even though San Miguel was the first town in present day Mexico to win independence from the Spanish Empire in the early nineteenth century, this lantern displays strong European old world influence. Constructed of wonderfully patinated wrought iron and oxidized tin, tall cylindrical shaped, framed with intricate scrollwork, openwork, and an abundance of fiolate decoration in the delicate form of serrated acanthus leaves. Retaining the six original bubble glass panels. The interior having a central candelabra like independently hung fixture adorned with six faux candle flame light bulbs. Originally made before the invention of electricity, this lantern has been converted from candle light to modern day electricity, accepting standard candelabra bulbs. Faux flaming bulbs included. It can be used a variety of ways, including as an indoor hanging pendant lamp, chandelier, outdoor patio or covered entry way, or placed as a table lamp on a large console table or sideboard. Timelessly elegant, producing a warm silhouette and enchanting glow with breath-taking radiating patterns, that lends to creating an ambiance of cozy romantic warmth and rich sophisticated depth, visually striking and reminiscent of a magnificent Medieval wood burning fireplace. Dimensions (approx): 36" High, 21" Diameter In the mid-18th century the settlement city of San Miguel de Allende was at its height, and this was when most of its distinctive large mansions, palaces, and religious buildings were constructed, most still remaining today. The town was also home to the area's wealthy hacienda owners. At that time, it was one of the most important and prosperous settlements in New Spain with a population reaching 30,000. By comparison, in the mid-18th century Boston...
