French 19th Century Wrought Iron Lantern

A high quality and most decorative French 19th century Renaissance st. Wrought Iron and Stained Glass lantern. This beautiful six window lantern is centered around the bottom finial of a spiraling Wrought Iron ring. Above the finial is an array of pressed scrolled Iron which expands upwards to the frame of the cage. The base of the cage is decorated with Iron oak leaves and twisted pointed daggers attached to each bar of the cage. The six Iron panels around each window contain scrolling movements and twisted bands that hold the beautiful glass within. A most impressive and ornately decorated antique electrified hanging lantern from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico (New Spain). Exquisitely hand-crafted in the 19th century (possibly late 18th century), even though San Miguel was the first town in present day Mexico to win independence from the Spanish Empire in the early nineteenth century, this lantern displays strong European old world influence. Constructed of wonderfully patinated wrought iron and oxidized tin, tall cylindrical shaped, framed with intricate scrollwork, openwork, and an abundance of fiolate decoration in the delicate form of serrated acanthus leaves.
