About the Item

Pair of opaline glass ceiling lamps, model "80112-25", designed by Finnish designer Paavo Tynell for Idman in Finland, 1950s. Designed by Finnish lighting pioneer Paavo Tynell and manufactured in the 1950s by Idman Oy, this pair of rare ceiling lamps is undeniably special. Per this particular model, each of these ceiling lamps is made up of only two parts - a delicate, round-shaped opaline glass shade and a concealed painted metal base or holder, equipped with a small metal handle. That metal base includes a simple mechanism that allows for easy removal of the opaline glass shade simply by rotating the metal handle. The "80112-25" model number stands for a few particular factors of the given lamp. "80112" stands for the lamp surface type, and "25" is simply the lamp’s diameter in centimeters. Generally, the "80112" model came in three different size variations, being 20, 25 and 30 centimeters in diameter. A visually similar ceiling lamp model to this one is the "80120," which Idman Oy had created using the same materials and even the same mechanism for removing the glass shade. The only difference between the two models was that the "80120" was higher and came in slightly different, three variations of size, more particularly 17, 22, and 26 centimeters in diameter. About the creator: A dominant figure in 20th-century Finnish lighting design, Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) started his career as a metalsmith beginner while he studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in Helsinki, where he graduated in 1913, receiving a firm education in the field of metal art. Five years later, in 1918, Tynell co-founded the promising Finnish manufacturing company Oy Taito Ab, which ultimately became the Finnish lighting industry innovator of that time. Tynell worked at the company as the managing director until his retirement in 1953, when the company was acquired by Idman Oy for which Tynell continued to design until the mid-1960s while also working as an independent designer for various other international companies. Considering 20th-century Finnish lighting design would be hard without mentioning a name like Paavo Tynell who is broadly referred to as “The Man Who Illuminated Finland”. By applying his knowledge and skill in metalwork, Tynell established a distinctive style that can be promptly recognized in his work and was able to create splendid designs, all of which employ important materials and beautifully illustrate nature through various fine decorative elements. Paavo Tynell was a lighting pioneer, a dominant figure in 20th-century Finnish lighting design, and his works today are considered the pinnacle of important 20th-century European lighting.
