Rare pair, 1970s handmade stoneware pendants in white glaze from Axella Denmark

About the Item

These Danish ceramic pendants, crafted in the 1970s by the renowned Axella pottery studio, represent a unique synthesis of form and function characteristic of Scandinavian design ethos of the era. Fashioned from high-quality clay and finished with a pristine white glaze, these pendants exude a sense of purity and simplicity, hallmarks of Danish design aesthetics. Upon closer inspection, one immediately notices the intriguing intricacies embedded within the surface of these pendants. Delicate perforations, strategically placed, punctuate the otherwise smooth exterior, creating a visual rhythm that captivates the observer. These apertures not only serve a decorative purpose but also contribute to the diffusion of light when these pendants are illuminated, casting mesmerizing patterns in their surroundings. Moreover, the negative spaces resulting from the perforations are ingeniously utilized as a means of ornamentation. Rather than relying solely on positive relief for decorative effect, the artists at Axella have masterfully employed the interplay between light and shadow, utilizing the absence of material to enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of these pieces. Adding to their allure is the thick and weighty glaze that envelops these pendants, imparting a sense of permanence and solidity. This glaze not only serves as a protective layer but also accentuates the tactile quality of the ceramics, inviting tactile exploration and appreciation of their craftsmanship.
