Scandinavian Modern Tapio Wirkkala Triennale pendant Light White Glass 1960s

About the Item

Tapio Wirkkala, "Triennaali" pendant, model K2-40, Idman / Ittala, 1960s Artist Tapio Wirkkala (1915 Hanko, Finland - 1985 Helsinki, Finland) A giant of Finnish design, Wirkkala was an artist of great diversity for whom no material was alien and who left no area of design unexplored. A glass design competition held by the Iittala glassworks in 1946 was the event that set his career in motion; the first prize went jointly to Wirkkala and Kaj Franck. With an oeuvre that ranges from exceptionally beautiful pieces of glass art to industrial design in the form of beer bottles and banknotes, Wirkkala also designed jewellery, sculptures, and furniture. More than any Finish designer from his era Wirkkala got his inspiration from the natural world. Together with his wife Rut Bryk – a famous artist / ceramist in her own right – he spent several months each year in his country house in Northern Lapland, situated directly at lake Paadar. The inspiration gained there, watching the changing seasons, Wirkkala incorporated in his many designs. The recipient of many awards, honorary titles, and a doctorate, Wirkkala several Grand Prix and gold medals at the Triennale di Milano. In 1951 together with Hans J. Wegner he was the first recipient of the prestigious Lunning prize, often referred to as “The Nobel prize of design”. His works are collected by many important museums in the world, among others: Museum of Modern Art, New York, Design Museum Helsinki, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Design Museum Gent and The British Museum, London. Description A "Triennaali" pendant / hanging lamp, model K2-40. Designed by Tapio Wirkkala for the Finnish section at the Milan Triennale of 1951. Executed by Iittala in collaboration with Idman. The satin finished, opalescent glass lampshade was made by the famous Finnish glassworks Iittala. The shade is crowned with a brass plate on top. The "Triennaali" pendant was produced between 1951 and 1981 and has since not been in production. Our estimation is that this pendant has been produced in the 1960's. Execution Idman Oy, Finland 1960's The glass lampshade was made by the Iittala glassworks Condition The pendant is in good vintage condition. No chips or cracks in the shade. We replaced the wiring, for safety reason. The original bulb socket has been preserved. By Tapio Wirkkala, Kultakeskus Oy

Tapio Wirkkala Scandinavian modern silver three arm candelabra Finland 1964 A three-armed candelabra in Sterling silver, model TW 202. Designed by Tapio Wirkkala in 1959 and executed by the craftsmen of Kultakeskus in 1964. This model candlestick was never made in serial production and could only be commissioned. The model could be ordered in two sizes a large size, like this one that holds a normal size candle or a smaller model that holds a smaller sized candle (similar to candlesticks model TW189). The candelabra has a completely smooth surface and tapers to about two-thirds of its height. In a sphere fitted there, two arms split off on either side. The candle holders are tapered and end in a chalice. About Tapio Wirkkala Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) was a Finnish designer and artist, best known for his work in glass and other materials. Born in Hanko, Finland, Wirkkala studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in Helsinki and later at the Helsinki University of Technology. Throughout his career, Wirkkala worked in a wide range of mediums, including glass, ceramics, metal, and wood, and was known for his innovative use of materials and his ability to create pieces that were both aesthetically pleasing and functional. Wirkkala’s work is characterized by his use of clean lines, organic shapes, and natural forms. He was particularly inspired by nature and was known for his ability to capture the essence of organic forms in his designs. For example, one of his most famous pieces is the “Birch” vase, which was created by casting liquid glass into a mold made from the trunk of a birch tree. This piece is a prime example of Wirkkala’s ability to combine his love of nature with his expertise in glassblowing techniques. In addition to his work in glass, Wirkkala was also highly regarded for his work in ceramics. He collaborated with several Finnish ceramics...
