Louis XVI Chandeliers and Pendants

LOUIS XVI STYLE

Reflecting the final era of royal opulence before the upheaval of the French Revolution, antique Louis XVI furniture features more angular shapes than the Rococo curves of the Louis XV style, harkening back to the imposing grandeur of Louis XIV.

Dating between 1750 and 1800, an era that overlapped with the last king of France whose reign was cut short by the guillotine, Louis XVI furniture, known as the goût grec, is emblematic of the neoclassical revision that French furniture underwent during the second half of the 18th century.

Authentic Louis XVI furniture characteristics include clean lines and carved details such as scrolls and acanthus flourishes that were inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. This was informed by a burgeoning interest in antiquity in the 18th century, owing to new archaeological excavations at sites including Pompeii and Herculaneum. It largely eclipsed the more East Asian–influenced ornamentation of Louis XV for something more geometric and symmetrical.

The Louis XVI style was defined by what was being created for the palatial rooms at Versailles and Fontainebleau, particularly for the queen, with cabinetmaker Jean-Henri Riesener being a favorite of Marie-Antoinette’s for his luxurious pieces accented with gilded bronze and marquetry. Furniture maker Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené was also a major designer of the period, with his pieces for the royal residences adorned with giltwood and neoclassical touches like tapered columns for chair legs and laurel leaf carvings. Cabinetmaker Adam Weisweiler occasionally incorporated into his furniture porcelain panels produced by Sèvres, a popular manufacturer of European ceramics that served the crown with serveware, vases and other decorative objects.

Large-Scale Louis XVI Style Rock Crystal Twelve-Light Chandelier, Maison Baguès
Located in West Palm Beach, FL
This large-scale, twelve-light Louis XVI style chandelier was created by the iconic firm of Maison Baguès of France. The piece dates to the 1930s and is fabricated of leaf gilt gold iron and a combination of rock crystal and clear crystal prisms and bobeches. Note: The main body of the chandelier measures approximately 43" height x 34" diameter and with the chain and canopy 13" the piece measures approximately 60" in height. Note: Image #10 is the canopy. History of Maison Baguès: Baguès was born in Auvergne around 1840 and became famous internationally as a creator of art lighting. In the beginning it specialized in liturgical bronze and the company quickly developed by the end of the 19th century thanks to bronze lighting brought about by the generalization of electricity. During the 1920s, Victor and Robert Baguès enlarged the bronze lighting collection of their father and created their own iron models: the range Baguès is composed of Parrots & Foliage chandeliers and wall sconces. The Development Some of the most well known art directors and decorators of that time appeared in the Baguès order books, to include: Jansen, Raymond Subes, and Armand Albert Rateau. The latter who, in 1928, created the arrangement for the decoration of Jeanne Lanvin’s mansion. In between both wars, the development extended onto the international stage, and permanent establishments were created in New York, Rome, and Cairo. The activity also extended into the manufacturing of stairway banisters and metal gates, which are still in position in numerous places in Paris, such as the Golden Door and the Theater of the Champs-Elysees. Today nestled under the Viaduct des Arts, Baguès pursues the edition of its oldest models, whose elegance is a reference on the subject. However, concerned about preserving its precious heritage, the company devoted itself to the restoration of collectible pieces. Its prestigious past has also been enriched with new creations imagined by major designers such as Garouste & Bonetti. In its workshops, iron and bronze are shaped according to traditional techniques. Chandeliers, lamps and wall sconces are leaf gilt gold or silver leaf, and the crystals are hand assembled. The Maison Baguès remains, for many decorators, a synonym of elegance and a guarantee of excellence as the most beautiful models of our Collection are re-edited for large French and international decoration offices such as Alberto Pinto, Pierre Yves Rochon...
