Flamingo Grey by Álvaro Siza for BD Barcelona, 1973

About the Item

Flamingo by Álvaro Siza for BD Barcelona, 1973 Designed by architect Alvaro Siza Vieira in 1972, the Flamingo lamp is part of design history. Its mobility and subtle structure beautifully fit into space with delicate and dynamic functionality. Alvaro Siza Vieira is one of the most modern and influential Portuguese architects on the international scene. For decades, he has presented a simple, coherent and clear embrace of creativity and contemporary design. The Flamingo Lamp follows this clarity and is a design reduced to its essentials. The halogen version was introduced in 1985 and continues to produce a balance of space and volume, sitting unimposingly regardless of the environment. Functional as always. Its coherent line and unembellished backbone produce a subtle curve and intimate light. It dispenses with ornaments. It is ungarnished and stripped-back, working coherently within any space. His work has a strong and unified aesthetic and includes lighting and industrial design pieces. Siza was born in Matosinhos, Portugal, in 1933. His first projects were built in his home country, where he earned a reputation for their elegant and respectful integration of landscape and architecture — the Marés swimming pools at Leça de Palmeira and the Da Boa Nova restaurant are perfect examples. Siza’s architecture is honest, simple, and efficient. It embraces every era with technical coherence, triggering a sense of inner contemplation. He won numerous architecture prizes, including the Mies Van der Rohe Award in 1988 and the Pritzker Prize in 1992 About the manufacturer: BD has been around for over half a century. It was founded in a nightclub in 1972 by a bunch of young architects and designers from Barcelona. They broke into the design world with a new vision: to produce and market their designs, and the designs of their friends with complete creative freedom and design criteria. Beginning with the designs of contemporaries like Ettore Sottsass, Rennie Mackintosh and Álvaro Siza, BD provoked a curiosity about design. These early pieces helped bring international recognition to the country’s design scene, and many of them still exist today. They are an international design company run by a collective ownership —Apartamento Magazine (Nacho Alegre, Omar Sosa, Marco Velardi), Taller Bofill (Pablo Bofill, Ricardo Bofill, Luna Paiva, Hernán Cortés, Fernando de la Mata), and Igor Urdampilleta from Arquitectura-G— all architects, publishers and designers. Along with one of the founders, Oscar Tusquets, this group fosters the same nonconformist spirit BD has had since its beginnings. Their independence as a company fuels their intentions and supports this purpose. BD are now expanding their design dialogue to delve into diverse realms of creativity, in design and in everything they do.

Varius Grey by Oscar Tusquets for BD Barcelona, 2022
By Oscar Tusquets Blanca
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Varius by Oscar Tusquets for BD Barcelona, 2022 The chair played yesterday and will play into tomorrow. Like a tuned Violin, Stradivarius. Its critical acclaim and commercial success kickstarted a new era of contemporary Spanish design. Loved for decades, the design is considered and remarkably adaptable. Stackable. Strong. Lasting. It stayed in tune. Based on the Stradivarius Violin but built to fit everywhere. This chair was brought back for its new finishes and styles. It is staying because it has a character of its own, now fit for every floor. The Varius plays again. Born in Barcelona in 1941, Oscar Tusquets graduated as an architect in 1965 from Barcelona’s Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura and was a member of Studi Per, together with Pep Bonet, Cristian Cirici, Lluís Clotet, and Mireia Riera. In 1972, they founded BD together, and Tusquets set about designing furniture and other objects, which would be recognised by the Spanish National Design Award. A number of his pieces appear in renowned museum collections, such as the MoMA in New York and the Centre George Pompidou in Paris. He has also been honoured with the Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes (Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts), the insignia of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of the Arts and Letters) and the Creu de Sant Jordi (Cross of Sant Jordi). Since the ‘90s, he has published books on a wide range of design-related topics. About the manufacturer: BD has been around for over half a century.
