About the Item

A Highly Important Caldwell Ormolu Mounted Cararra Marble Figural Floor Lamp. The floor lamp stands on a tripartite base of white Carrara marble, each side mounted with an ormolu winged female term figure in full relief. These figures have finely cast hair, defined facial features, and scrolling acanthus wings that extend outward to support the structure. The base edges are molded and rest upon three paw-form feet, also in ormolu, with pronounced claws and knuckled details. Between each foot, additional scrollwork rises toward the central marble plinth, with mask motifs integrated into the scroll ends. The stem begins above a short ormolu collar and transitions into a baluster-form section with alternating patinated and gilt finishes. The lower stem features acanthus leaf mounts over a black ground, surmounted by an elongated ovoid section in gilt, decorated with raised floral medallions on a stippled background. The upper portion of this section is cast with three female torsos in the round, each joined at the back, their hair swept into curls. Above, the shaft continues in a turned and knopped form, with more acanthus ornament and foliate collars. The black-painted sections show wear, revealing the underlying surface, while the ormolu retains its chased detailing. The lamp's upper assembly consists of an ornate gilt sphere with vertical leaf-tipped ribs and laurel leaf borders, below a tassel-form element cast with crossed ropes and knotted fringe. This supports the lighting cluster, fitted with multiple sockets on scrolling arms and operated by pull chains. A tall, pierced finial with symmetrical foliate motifs crowns the piece. The E. F. Caldwell & Co. was a leading American manufacturer of high-quality lighting fixtures and decorative metalwork, founded in New York City in 1895 by Edward F. Caldwell and Victor von Lossberg. The company specialized in designing and producing elaborate chandeliers, sconces, table lamps, and architectural bronze fittings for prominent private residences, public buildings, and institutions. Their work was known for exceptional detail, often drawing inspiration from European historical styles such as Louis XIV, Louis XVI, and Empire. E. F. Caldwell & Co. collaborated with top architects and interior designers of the Gilded Age and early 20th century, supplying commissions for clients including the White House and major museums. The firm remained active until the mid-20th century, and its surviving pieces are now highly prized by collectors for their craftsmanship and design. U.S., Circa: 1899-1905
