- "G30 - The Kite" Floor Lamp by Pierre Guariche, France 1950sBy Pierre GuaricheLocated in Utrecht, NLPierre Guariche is one of the most important designers of the French post-war period. Guariche is best known for the luminaires he designed, many of which feature details like hidden light sources, perforated metal surfaces and slender leg structures. With its clever construction, the “Kite” is a great example of the designer’s endless interest in technological innovation. Officially called model “G30”, this floor lamp was designed in the early 1950s. Guariche’s mid-century lights were created between 1951 and 1959, and are innovatively designed with a visible joy of experimentation. This is especially apparent in this model, featuring elements that may appear purely decorative, but on closer inspection turn out to be absolutely functional. The design is defined by the reflector, which also inspired the model’s nickname. Its white lacquered, perforated sheet metal reflector resembles a boat’s sail, and creates a filtered and soft light. This hidden illuminant and the glare-free light flow by means of the clever reflector provides atmospheric ambient light, while also giving the lamp a sculptural appearance. The light “sail...Category

- Swedish Brass Floor Lamp by Öia Belysning, Sweden, circa 1960sBy BelysningLocated in Utrecht, NLSwedish Modern, with its simplified lines and lack of excessive ornamentation, was a counter reaction to the earlier, more decorative design movements such as Art Deco. In comparison, as this floor lamp demonstrates, the midcentury era brought streamlined modernism to Sweden as well. This model was created by the Swedish firm, ÖIA during the golden age of Scandinavian lighting design. The design is characterized by its simplified forms, and stylishly contrasting materials. The body is composed of a beautiful, patinated brass structure with the lower part of the tube wrapped in leather. The round, brass column frames the leather thus highlighting the beautiful handiwork. The contrasting materials are the main appeal of this model and bring the aesthetic into modernism. The shade has a Classic shape that is ideal to direct the light, with a beautiful brass colour and a decorative ring. The head is adjustable thanks to the OMI made joints at the neck, making this lamp perfect spotlight lighting. The OMI company (Otto Meinzer GmbH & Co Metallwarenfabrik from Iserlohn in Germany) was a manufacturer of chromed brass joints for the European and the USA lighting...Category
