Pair of torches

About the Item

Beyond their function as light sources, this pair of torchères truly embodies the spirit of decorative art from the late 19th or early 20th century, where storytelling and allegorical representation were highly valued. The choice of a boy and a girl as the central figures immediately introduces a charming and relatable narrative. Perhaps they are meant to represent innocence and burgeoning life, offering forth the bounty of light and beauty symbolized by the overflowing cornucopias. The use of oxidized brass for the figures imparts a sense of age and timelessness, suggesting that these pieces might have graced elegant interiors for generations. The darker patina of the oxidized brass provides a beautiful contrast to the gleaming 24-karat gold plating on the intricate arms, further highlighting the meticulous craftsmanship and the interplay of light and shadow. The cornucopias, overflowing with delicate bouquets of flowers, reinforce the theme of abundance and natural beauty. The flowers themselves, though their material isn't specified, would likely be rendered with careful attention to detail, perhaps in metal or a durable composite, to withstand the test of time. Their presence adds a touch of delicate color and organic form to the otherwise metallic structure. The ascent of thirteen light-bearing arms from the cornucopias creates a dramatic and visually striking effect. The chiseled brass, painstakingly shaped and then gilded, would have reflected and amplified the light, whether from actual candles or early electric bulbs fitted with elegant shades. The sheer number of light sources suggests these torchères were intended to illuminate significant spaces, casting a warm and inviting glow across grand rooms. The fact that these are a pair is also significant. Paired objects were highly fashionable for interior decoration, creating a sense of balance and symmetry within a room. These torchères would have likely been positioned flanking a doorway, a fireplace, or as focal points on opposite sides of a large salon, their presence enhancing the overall harmony and grandeur of the space. These torchères are more than mere functional objects; they are sculptural works of art that encapsulate the aesthetic sensibilities of their time. They speak of a desire for beauty, craftsmanship, and the incorporation of narrative and symbolism into everyday objects. Owning such a pair would have been a testament to the refined taste and cultural appreciation of the owner, and they continue to be admired today for their artistic merit and historical charm. Their presence in a contemporary setting would undoubtedly add a touch of romantic elegance and a captivating story to the décor.

Italian Wooden Church Candlesticks in the Shape of a Torch Holder
Located in Prato, Tuscany
We kindly suggest that you read the entire description, as with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to ensure the authenticity of our objects. Peculiar, rare, and antique pair of Italian altar candlesticks in the shape of a torch; they were made completely by the technique of manual turning, a special way of working that allows the objects to have a rounded shape: the piece of wood rotates with the aid of the lathe, while the craftsman uses special tools called "gouges" to shape and decorate its surface; they were then painted with a pasty gray-white varnish, which over time has taken on the craquelure effect; on the wooden structure we did not, therefore, consider doing any restoration because its veiled patina and imperfections make it truly alluring and fascinating and attest to its antiquity and authenticity; at the top of each one is a metal "bobeche" of shaped leaves made to hold large candles; when, in more recent times, they were electrified, a candle-shaped lamp holder was applied; the base is made of three lion's paws in cast bronze. They were produced in a craft workshop in the province of Lucca (Tuscany, Italy) between 1830 and 1835; the area was famous for producing liturgical furnishings of all kinds. The master craftsman was inspired by ancient medieval torch...
