About the Item

Large circular glass flush mount in heavily textured clear glass by Kaiser, Germany, mid-20th century. The shade is made of a single piece of handcrafted textured clear glass, incorporating three metal wires and held in place by three silver-plated brackets - a beautiful piece of glass which, for us, brings to mind the brutalist organic ice sculpture of Tapio Wirkkala. The fixture is in good vintage condition overall, and due to the age and nature of this piece there may be minor imperfections in the glass. We have had the three brackets professionally re-plated; this was carried out after the main image was taken, and image 5 shows the brackets after the work. Wiring, Bulbs and Installation: The metal ceiling plate is painted white, with the original six ceramic bulb-holders installed; each bulb-holder takes a small screw-fitting bulb (E14), and the original cable cover is in place in the centre. The position of the bulb-holders is set out to create a triangle of light, diffused by the glass. The original base plate advises maximum wattage of 40W, however in order to protect this fixture for the future, we usually advise low-heat bulbs are installed. New wiring will be required to suit your local needs and regulations. Please note this is a heavy piece which will require professional installation. Approximate dimensions: - Diameter of glass 50cm - Overall diameter 52cm (based on radius of chrome fixings of approximately 26cm) - Height of glass only, approximately 7.5cm - Height including small spacers on the ceiling side of the plate, approximately 10.5cm Light will be dismantled for shipping.

A simple architectural piece comprising twin ceiling lights on a single back plate, designed by Alvar Aalto and stamped by the Finnish manufacturer Idman. Overall the fixture is in fair vintage condition with lots of signs of wear from age and use - scratches, dents, dust and fading - all left as found. Wiring: The original wiring has been partially removed, and will need to be replaced prior to install. The original bulb-holders took E27 screw-fitting bulbs; as with all vintage pieces we recommend the use of low heat bulbs to protect the fixture for the future. There are two holes on the plate for installation (fixings not included). The diffusers simply rest in place, and can be removed for shipping. This design is believed to have been created for the Enso-Gutzeit headquarters in Helsinki, which was designed by Aalto and completed in 1962.
