Period Arts & Crafts Iron and Amber Mica Lantern

About the Item

Period arts and crafts iron and original amber mica lantern. Wired with 5 feet of electrical cord, and comes with 3 feet of antique brass chain and bronze canopy. Arts and Crafts and Prairie Style electric lighting fixtures are unique expressions of craft, creativity, and technology. The elegant lines, rich colors, striking forms, and masterful craftsmanship of these fixtures continue to resonate strongly with twenty-first century audiences. The flowering of Arts and Crafts lighting corresponded with an increased demand for electricity in the early twentieth century. Artisans approached the new technology with a modern aesthetic – simple, functional, and tasteful forms – instead of looking to past styles or applying excessive ornament. Handcrafted fixtures in beautiful metals, adorned with shades of glass or mica to temper harsh light, became important artistic enhancements to Prairie Style or Arts and Crafts interiors. Some firms, such as the Craftsman Workshops, Stickley Brothers, and Roycroft, even displayed their fixtures in model rooms, complete with complementary furniture, metalwork, and textiles.

Early Marbro Urn Lamps with Green Painted Roman Ruins - a Pair
Located in Denver, CO
This early pair of Marbro urn table lamps feature beautiful Roman ruins, trees, plants and grasses. The urns are most likely Italian. They retain their original mogul base sockets (E39 lamp base) and electrical cord. Both have been inspected and are in good working order. The glazing has natural imperfections which happens during the firing process. These imperfections are not defects and are considered to be a part of the overall beauty of the lamps. Please see photos showing variances and imperfections. Measurements: 10-3/4"diameter at bulb, 6-3/4" width at porcelain base, 8" width lion paw foot to foot x 36" overall height. The Marbro Lamp Company began by Morris Markoff and his brother soon after the end of World War II. They were most well-known for their lamps, however, and it is their lamp products that continue to make an impact today. The Markoff brothers scoured the globe for gorgeous lamp parts...
