About the Item
An exquisite pair of French 19th/20th century Louis XVI patinated wrought-iron and glass lanterns, with a warm reddish brown hue. This style was inspired by the last King of France, Louis XVI, and was characterized by classical ornamentation and a revival of Greek styles.
These antique lanterns were made after an 18th-century model for the Chateau of Versailles and use the octagonal 'Versailles' or 'beehive' form. The body displays a fabulous shape and symmetry with an array of windows within a patinated wrought-iron cage surrounding the light. The frame is surmounted with flower buttons at the corners which hold panes of glass. The upper support of these lanterns features a crown and a rotation of acanthus leaf motifs. The lantern is centered by a richly chased bottom foliate finial with additional acanthus leaves.
These gorgeous lanterns invite a grandiose style into any home, making them the perfect additions to a hallway, formal dining, or living room.
