About the Item
A exquisite pair of large and unique antique Japanese octagonal form reticulated gilt copper lanterns. These large antique Japanese gilt copper lanterns are hexagonal, suspended by a circular hanging ring above a domed top element. The upper section is bordered by six outward-facing, lobed panels, each decorated with engraved foliate scrolls and centered by a circular crest of three overlapping paulownia leaves enclosed within a ring. The central body is bulbous in profile, constructed with six pierced panels, each bordered in relief and featuring an openwork ground of scrolling tendrils surrounding a medallion containing the same paulownia motif. The base is tiered, set with rectangular panels of raised scrolling cloud designs, and terminates in six bracket-like feet with engraved ornamentation.
The lanterns are crafted of copper with a gilt surface, much of which remains intact across both the engraved and relief portions. Areas of the surface display the natural patina of age, particularly along the pierced central sections and feet. The paulownia crest, repeated consistently across the lanterns, provides a unifying decorative element, while the pierced work allows light to filter through when lit. Both lanterns are constructed in multiple sections, with riveted joints and structural bands reinforcing the pierced copper body.
Such lanterns were produced for suspension in temple or shrine settings, often made in pairs to flank an entrance or interior space. The use of gilt copper is consistent with Japanese metalworking traditions for ceremonial fittings, allowing both durability and decorative richness. The paulownia crest, known as "kiri-mon," is a historically significant motif frequently used in Japanese decorative arts. These lanterns represent the type of large-scale gilt metalwork associated with Buddhist and Shinto architectural furnishing, produced for both illumination and ornament.
