Large Pair of French Patinated Bronze Neoclassical Sconces with Empire Influences, Mid-20th Century, Candelabra Bulb up to 60W
A grand pair of French patinated bronze wall sconces, mid-20th century, crafted in the opulent 19th-century Neoclassical style with strong Empire influences. Measuring 28″ high by 20″ wide with an 8″ projection (4″ backplate), these sconces impress with their scale, crisp casting, and architectural presence.
The pierced backplates feature anthemion, palmettes, rosettes, and scrolling foliage—classical motifs that symbolize triumph, eternity, and unity. The heavy, scrolling arms are reeded and foliate, terminating in drip pans with castellated rims, a detail that evokes the ceremonial grandeur of the French Empire. The dark patinated bronze surface adds depth and shadow, highlighting the refined detail while lending the sconces a stately, antique appearance.
Rewired for modern use, they are ready for installation and ideal for flanking mirrors, mantelpieces, or doorways in a formal interior. Their commanding scale makes them particularly suited for entry halls, libraries, and dining rooms where dramatic architectural lighting is desired.
