Modular Typ 505 lamp by Curt Fischer for Midgard, 1960s

About the Item

A TYP 505 wall mounted lamp, based on the iconic TYP 113. This modular lamp was produced with 3 different arm lengths, 3 types of (rotating) lampshades and a choice in type of joints. The lamp is in good condition, rewired and all parts working and rotating. The original lightswitch is also still present and working. Curt Fischer is well known for his innovative designs and still regarded as one of the greatest 20th-century inventors. At the time, just after WW1, recovering from the war, people worked long hours until late in the evening. The then-typical lamps would only cast light from the ceiling, causing the shadow of the worker’s body and head to cast shades over their projects. For an inventor like Curt Fischer, who had transformed horse-drawn coaches into mobile radio stations during the war and who had participated in the development of the communication devices for the Zeppelin, this situation posed an intriguing challenge. It wouldn’t take him long to come up with a solution: in November 1919, his famous Scherenleuchte (Scissorarm Lamp) was born, soon to be followed by other new types of Machine lamps. They would soon be found in the metal workshop of the Dessau Bauhaus. With the development of these adjustablee lamps, Curt Fischer became the inventor of directional light. In 1922 he created the first glare-free lampshade (with a rotatable and asymmetrical design) for perfectly directed light. His lamps are known to have been in the homes and workplaces of famous Bauhaus designers like Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer and Marianne Brandt.

  • Dutch Art Deco desk lamp by Daalderop, 1920s
    By Daalderop KDM Royal Holland
    Located in EVERDINGEN, NL
A rare Dutch Art Deco table lamp or bedside light by Dutch manufacturer Daalderop, c. 1925. The piece is in excellent condition regarding its age. These lamps were produced in brass and nickel plate. This one is the nickel version. The lampshade is made of painted parchment, and is reminiscent of batik (tie-dyed) designs by Bogtman. The top can come off to change the lightbulb. Because of punched holes in the top as well as the bottom the light shines through these holes when placed in a dark room, which has a lovely effect on the surrounding surface. These holes had an aesthetic function as well as necessary in those times for the heat of the (incandescent) lightbulb to escape. It now works with modern energy efficient (E27) lightbulbs. The one that is now inside will be included. The Daalderop factory was founded in 1880 by J.N. Daalderop. in the eraly years they produced household items like tableware, pots and dishes, kettles, and gas lamps. The style of the products evolved towards that of art deco and the Amsterdam School. At the end of the 1930s, the company had approximately a thousand employees, making it one of the largest employers in Tiel. The family business was under the undisputed leadership of Johan Daalderop (1883-1961). Until the Second World War their most important designer was Meine Huisenga. Klaas van Aken was also one of the designers. The lamp is depicted in the Dutch Art Deco/Art Nouveau guide...
