About the Item

18th C. Chelsea Porcelain Figure of Shakespeare, Now As A Lamp Complete with a custom-made shade 23.5" h, shade measures 12 w x 9" h The drilled figure alone measures 12" hx 7"w x 4" d. This Chelsea Gold Anchor porcelain figure of Shakespeare is after a statue by Peter Scheemakers from a design by William Kent in Westminster Abbey. Depicts Shakespeare standing with his right elbow resting on a pile of books with an open scroll, which all rest upon a column with crowned heads at each corner and a purple cape across his back. Raised on a scroll base. Chelsea Porcelain Manufactory's famous gold anchor mark, which was used in the mid-18th century (circa 1756-1769). Chelsea was one of the earliest and most prestigious English porcelain manufacturers, known for producing high-quality, Rococo-style figurines, often influenced by Meissen and French Sèvres porcelain. Gold Anchor Mark: If the anchor mark is hand-painted in gold (rather than red or blue), it aligns with Chelsea's gold anchor period (1756-1769). The gilt pinwheel mark is a distinguishing feature found on certain Chelsea Porcelain Manufactory figures and wares, particularly those from the Gold Anchor period (c. 1756-1769). It is often a small, gilded motif resembling a stylized pinwheel, rosette, or sunburst and is usually applied to porcelain bases or decorative elements.
