1920’s Silk and Lace Table Lamp Made from Elements of Flappers Clothing

About the Item

A unique and original hand made table lamp in a traditional 1910’s form created in New York City in the mid 1920’s by wrapping a steel framed skeleton in Silk, mesh, lace, and a multitude of floral decorative decorative elements all of which were in use in these combinations during the Jazz Age for creating the clothing of “flappers” and “it” girls of the era. Of special note is the cloth pin back pin on the lamps base depicting a winking (albeit aging) 1920’s Flapper in a bonnet made from the same lace as the lamp. Implying she would be wearing a dress made from all the same materials. Fabric has torn in spots around the base and has a tear in the bell of the lamp shade but no severe damages, or missing sections and most importantly, no burns. Thankfully a previous owner put a candelabra socket reducer in the lamp and had been using it with a 10 watt bulb. A 25 watt bulb would have scorched and destroyed this lamp 70 years ago and it’s low wattage bulbs have served to save this lamps life over the long haul. Bought from an antiques shop in Ft. Greene Brooklyn in the 1990s where it had been on display since the 1970’s the lamp was probably made close by at a local Garmentos dress shop in the 1920’s it has been in permanent collection till recently and spent most of its time when not on display wrapped in acid free paper and stored in its own box. A lamp for academic preservation or fashion institutions collection as much as a lover of lighting this piece is a unique and impossible to reproduce archival piece of NYC fashion and cultural history. It should not be placed in direct sunlight or subjected to extremes of heat or humidity. Care should be taken when changing the lightbulb or putting in a brighter light not to risk burning the fabric or putting stress on the bell and ripping the lace. Rewired in 2020 with new two wire cloth cable and retaining its original socket and chained pull switch the lamp is in vintage restored condition ready for another century of use.
