About the Item

19th century, pair of French git bronze candlesticks with Vestals These two chiselled and gilt bronze candlesticks were made at the beginning of the 19th century and are inspired by the neoclassical taste that developed in France after 1750 (Louis XVI era) involving all decorative arts. Three female figures, identifiable as vestals and placed behind each other, form the stem of the candlestick. The circular base with steps, with three feet, has a refined chisel with vegetable elements of classic taste. Above the head of the three women is placed a circular section element that holds the candle, decorated with phytomorphic elements. This model is inspired by the works of Robert-Joseph Auguste (1723-1805) who, together with Jacques Roettiers (1707-1784) developed the neoclassical in goldsmithing. These candlesticks are comparable to a pair of candlesticks made in 1775 by Auguste for King Gustav III of Sweden, and now in the Metropolitan Museum of New York. The executive refinement and the brightness of the golden bronze give the objects easy adaptability, perfect to adorn your furniture or a fireplace and embellish your table.
