About the Item
The technique of pâte sur pâte (French for "mass on mass") is an elaborate and fascinating method of porcelain decoration that became particularly popular in the second half of the 19th century. Originally developed in France, this technique gained a special status in the art of porcelain production and was soon adopted in other European countries such as England and Germany.
Around 1880, the pâte sur pâte technique reached a peak in its artistic and technical realisation. Some of the most impressive vases were created during this period, characterised by their fine detail work and the harmonious combination of relief and transparency.
In the production of such a vase, the basic mould was first made of porcelain. Transparent, porcelain-like layers were then applied to this mould, with each layer being individually modelled and designed. The artists used liquid porcelain ("slip") to build up the desired patterns and motifs, usually floral or figurative representations, layer by layer. After each layer, the workpiece had to dry before the next was applied. This process required not only great skill, but also a great deal of patience, as the various layers had to be applied and worked with extreme precision. The vases made around 1880 using the pâte sur pâte technique are not only a testament to the high level of craftsmanship of their creators, but also to the taste and aesthetics of the late 19th century. They combine technical mastery with artistic creativity and are examples of the perfection that was achieved in porcelain production at this time.
The pair of lamps has been re-electrified and the lampshades have been renewed. These are made of high-quality material and are covered with gold foil on the inside to ensure aesthetic lighting.
