Beautiful Flygsfors table lamps design by Helena Tynell

About the Item

Flygsfors Glass Factory Flygsfors Glasbruk was a glass factory in Flygsfors in Nybro municipality, founded in 1888 and closed in 1979. It was started in Flygsfors in 1863 as a hammer forge. With worse economic conditions for the small Småland ironworks, the Flygsfors glass factory was started in 1888. It was leased out in 1889 to mill owner C.A. Svensson and fabricator Janne Elgqvist, who soon bought the mill and before long Svensson became the sole owner. Svensson died in 1914, and in 1919 the mill was sold to be closed down in 1920. It was resurrected in 1930 when a new company under Gustav and Oskar Rosander took over the mill and got it back on its feet. During the first 30 years, only window glass was produced, but they later switched to lighting glass and decorative glass. Production has been great; in the 1950s, the mill was Europe's largest manufacturer of lighting glass and had approximately 200 employees. In 1965, the Flygsfors Group was formed with the Gadderås and Målerås glass mills and a total of approximately 300 employees. The mill was taken over in 1974 by Orrefors and closed down in 1979. In 1985, Elving Conradsson from Bergdala glassworks tried for a few months to breathe new life into the cabin, but the attempt failed. In 1992, operations in the mill premises were resumed again on a very small scale, and today multicolored art glass is made from crushed glass. Hellin Helena Tynell – one of the top ten designers from Finland – freelanced designer at Flygsfors glasbruk She was born in Turpeinen 10 December 1918 in Äänekoski, died 18 January 2016 in Tusby, was a Finnish designer. Helena Tynell graduated in 1943 from the Central School of Arts in Helsinki. In the years 1943–1946, she worked with ceramic design at Arabia. Parallel to this and until 1953, she also worked with lighting at Taito Oy. Between 1946 and 1976 she was one of the leading designers at Riihimäen Lasi. She also freelanced for companies such as Flygsfors glasbruk, Bega Leuchten, Glashütte Limburg (both in Germany) and for Fostoria Glass in the USA. She was married to the well-known Finnish designer Paavo Tynell (1890–1973). Those particular table lamps is light and elegant in its design, it is very typical of the period and are therefore easy to fit in. Not too dominant but still secure in its place. They will find there own place wherever they are.
