Bertil Brisborg Table Lamp in Brass, Glazed Ceramic, Nordiska Kompaniet, 1940s

About the Item

This very rare table lamp was designed by Bertil Brisborg and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden in the late 1940s. The design is distinguished by its circular base and central column in antique-patinated brass. The striking, centrally placed, oval-shaped element is crafted from mint green glazed ceramic with a diagonal swirl pattern. The tapered lampshade has been newly refreshed in a smooth ivory fabric, and a white push switch is positioned on the base. The lamp is in good original condition, with a natural patina on the brass and minor signs of wear consistent with age and use. The shade has been renewed, and the piece has been rewired to EU standards with a 220V European plug. Specified Dimensions: Total Height including shade: 39 cm / 15.35 inches Height of the base only (excluding shade): 30.5 cm / 12 inches Diameter of the shade: 30.5 cm / 12 inches Diameter of the base: 13.5 cm / 5.31 inches Bertil Brisborg served as head of the lighting department at Nordiska Kompaniet from 1941, likely continuing in that role until the mid-1960s. He led the company into a new era and became a prominent figure in shaping the design language now known as Swedish Modern. A hallmark of Brisborg’s early work was the innovative use of leather in lighting fixtures in the early 1940s — a pioneering move at the time. He also led the development of fixtures for the Triva collection and designed several groundbreaking pieces throughout the 1940s and 1950s. Other notable Swedish Modern designers active during this era include Harald Notini, Hans Bergström, Erik Tidstrand, Hans-Agne Jakobsson, and Josef Frank.

Nordiska Kompaniet 'Hytte' Armchair in Solid Pine, Swedish Modern, 1940s
By Axel Einar Hjorth, Nordiska Kompaniet, David Rosén
Located in The Hague, NL
This rare armchair was produced by the Swedish company Nordiska Kompaniet in the early 1940s. It belongs to the 'Hytte' series, which is documented in several NK catalogs and advertisements from the time. The Hytte series was a continuation of Axel Einar Hjorth's Sportstugemöbler ("sports cabin furnishings"), a collection of pinewood furniture designed for country homes. After Hjorth, designer David Rosén carried on this style, creating several series for Nordiska Kompaniet. Crafted entirely from pinewood, the chair features club-shaped, tapered legs connected by stretchers, a slatted and slightly curved backrest, and carved armrests. It is versatile and can be used as a desk chair or an elegant side chair. The chair remains in completely original condition, with a natural and even patina on the pinewood. It shows minor wear consistent with age and use. One of the four furniture...
