Danish Søholm Stentøj ceramic table lamp, glazed stoneware design Haico Nitzsche

About the Item

Danish Mid-Century stoneware table lamp of the 1970s, attributed to Haico Nitzsche. Sculptural lamp in earthy colored glazed stoneware. Haico Nitzsche trained in ceramics in Germany before teaching at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, India in 1968-70. Nitzsche was one of the main creators of ceramic art forms in Denmark in the 1970s and was the technical leader and designer of Søholm from 1974 to 1982. His work is always distinguished by functional objects with the strong sculptural essence. Manufactured by Søholm Stentøj (Soholm pottery) on the island of Bornholm, Denmark. Søholm Stentøj, which means Soholm’s sandstone, was founded in 1835 by Herman Sonne Wolffsen and Edvard Sonne. The name Søholm, comes from the factory where the two founders were employed, a pottery near Copenhagen, in 1828-1839. It was the oldest factory operating in Bornholm, a Danish island off the south coast of Sweden, until it closed in 1996. In the middle of the 20th century, Søholm produced a wide range of stoneware in various patterns and shapes. Several Designers worked for Søholm Stentøj as Einar Johansen, Maria Philippi, Noomi Backhausen among others. This model is usually signed with the manufacturer's mark and the name of the designer (Haico). This is not the case here, but the lamp is identical to others, beside the finish which is a little bit different (unusual grey-blue effects). Probably it is a prototype or pre-series lamp. The lamp comes with a new lampshade. E26-E27 socket. Works with 110v and 220v. The EU-plug can be replaced by a US-plug for free. Lampshade diameter: 14.17" (35cm). Total height including lampshade: 21.65" (55 cm). Height of the lamp base including socket: 14.17" (36cm). Dimensions of the lamp base: 9.45" (24cm) x 4.72" (12cm).
