About the Item

Amsterdam School batiked wooden tablelamp by most probably (and confirmed by an expert in the field) L. Bogtman. Signed underneath and in very good condition. The original lampshade frame has been reupholstered in linen. The names of L. Bogtman and H. Steinpatz are often used interchangeably because their designs are so very similar. They both handcrafted many smaller and bigger utensils and objects using batik decoration technique in this oriental inspired style. They are best known for handcrafting small utensils such as bookends, clocks and bowls. Especially the more rare batiked items like lamps and pieces of furniture are very desirable. The designs were clearly orientally inspired and they are now considered to be part of Amsterdam School movement. ''The Amsterdam School'' stands for the Dutch architectural movement that flourished between 1910 and 1940. The movement influenced other art forms such as sculpture, furniture design and urban planning. Some characteristics of the Amsterdam School include: Expressionist and organic shapes, decorative sculptural elements and a focus on craftsmanship. The Amsterdam School movement is seen as a very important chapter in Dutch architectural history and to this day a very recognizable and beloved style worldwide.
