About the Item

This lamp, circa 1920, is styled in the French Empire fashion, which draws inspiration from ancient Greek and Roman designs and was popularized during the rule of Napoleon Bonaparte. The black marble base supports a decorative gilt bronze (ormolou) statue. The bronze features a globe with a perched eagle, symbolizing Napoleonic power and victory, elements that were central to imperial iconography. The base includes an acanthus leaf design, a motif from classical antiquity symbolizing immortality. A gilt-bronze stem, adorned with detailed engraving, embossing, a diamond lattice pattern, and acanthus leaf motifs, connects the base to the light socket and shade. The shade is a dark green tole, a thin metal frequently used during this period. The black and gold color scheme with the lacquered brass elements, is classic to the Empire style, offering a stark yet elegant contrast. Overall this is an elegant and sophisticated lamp that holds a touch of important French history. It makes a bold statement of success and triumph. H=26 in. D=12 in. D=12 in. 30 lbs.
